The Catholic Catechism recognises the value of pilgrimage as a chance for Catholics to nurture and work on their faith. The Catechism states: Pilgrimages evoke our earthly journey towards heaven and are traditionally very special occasions for renewal in prayer (Catholic Catechism 2691). We have so many inspiring and historical opportunities here in Pittsburgh to deepen our faith. This is the journey of Catholic life. Any pilgrimage made reflects the image of the great pilgrimage of our life. These are the moments where we step out of our comfort zone, out of our daily routine, to encounter the living God. Pope Benedict said, “To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendor and produced rich fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe. Beginning with our baptism, we are on a pilgrimage through this temporary homeland, our eyes set on our heavenly home."
